October 18, 2010 - Glendale, AZ -Today, John Thrasher joined over 200 other Democratic candidates, and members of Congress, across the nation in jointly going "on offense" against Republican plans to cut Social Security - by promising to oppose any cuts, any raising of the retirement age, and any privatization of one of America's most popular and successful programs for seniors and workers.

"Republicans have made clear they will work to cut Social Security, and privatize Social Security, and in some cases they believe Social Security is unconstitutional," said Mr. Thrasher. "I will oppose cuts, protect Social Security, and be a solid fighter for middle-class workers, seniors, and families."

The coalition announced today was organized by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), a 450,000 member grassroots organization that advocates for progressive candidates and policies. Over 90 candidates today joined over 135 members of Congress who signed a letter circulated by House Progressive Caucus Chair Raul Grijalva (AZ) this past month, which was supported by groups like the PCCC, Social Security Works, the Strengthen Social Security Campaign, MoveOn.org and others.

The joint candidate campaign was announced today in an email to PCCC members by Jack Conway, the Attorney General of Kentucky whose opponent for Senate this year, Rand Paul, believes Social Security is unconstitutional.

"With a Tea Party deep on the fringe, the way for Democrats to win in 2010 is to have a spine -- and go on offense," said Conway. "We're saying no privatization, no raising the retirement age, no messing with the best program for seniors and workers in American history -- and no mincing words about it."
